Unique Engagement Photos in Madison with Franklin the Tortoise // Christina + Mark

Jul 29, 2026

When Christina first reached out, she told me she and Mark already had a wedding photographer. Since their photographer is based out of state, they wanted to find someone local to capture their engagement photos here in Madison, where they live and where they’ll be getting married.

I honestly loved that idea.

Their engagement session wasn’t about checking something off the wedding to-do list. It was about documenting this season of life in the city they call home. They wanted unique engagement photos in Madison that felt relaxed, personal, and true to them. And they absolutely delivered.

Starting at the Wisconsin State Capitol

We began their engagement session at the Wisconsin State Capitol, one of the most iconic spots in downtown Madison.

The Capitol is always one of my favorite places to photograph because it offers so much variety. The beautiful architecture, marble details, and surrounding Capitol Square create timeless backdrops while still allowing plenty of room to wander, laugh, and simply enjoy being together.

Christina and Mark were so natural with each other from the very beginning. It felt more like we were walking around downtown together than stopping for posed photos every few minutes, which is exactly how I love engagement sessions to feel.

Wandering Through State Street

From there, we made our way down State Street.

This stretch of downtown Madison always brings so much personality to a session. Every block feels a little different, and we took advantage of colorful storefronts, historic buildings, and whatever beautiful light we could find along the way.

One of my favorite parts of photographing engagement sessions is letting couples simply be together. We walked, talked about wedding plans, laughed, and stopped whenever something caught our eye.

Those in-between moments are almost always my favorite.

Meet Franklin

Now for the real reason you’re here…

Franklin.

Christina and Mark brought along their pet tortoise, and I can confidently say this was a first for me.

Franklin quickly became the star of our session as we walked through downtown. People smiled, asked questions, and couldn’t help but stop to admire him.

Honestly, I couldn’t blame them.

As unique as Franklin was, what I loved most wasn’t simply that they brought a tortoise. It was that they chose to include something that’s genuinely part of their life together.

Whether it’s your favorite neighborhood, your dog, your favorite coffee shop, or, apparently, your pet tortoise, those personal touches tell your story in a way no Pinterest inspiration ever could.

Ending at Memorial Union Terrace

We wrapped up the evening at Memorial Union Terrace.

If you’ve spent any time in Madison, you know there’s something special about ending the day by the lake. The Terrace is one of those places that feels unmistakably Madison, making it the perfect final stop for Christina and Mark’s engagement session.

Between the waterfront views, the colorful chairs, and the relaxed atmosphere, it was the perfect place to slow down and soak in the last bit of the evening together.

The Best Engagement Photos Feel Personal

One of my favorite things about this session is that it perfectly reflects who Christina and Mark are.

They chose locations that mean something to them.

They spent the evening simply exploring their city together.

And they brought Franklin, who completely stole the show (sorry, Christina and Mark).

Those are the kinds of details that make photos meaningful years from now.

The best unique engagement photos in Madison aren’t about finding the trendiest location or recreating someone else’s ideas. They’re about documenting your relationship as it is right now, in the places and with the people (or pets!) that matter most.

That’s exactly what this session did.
