This was a special one for me. It was my very first round of mini sessions (which are such a great fit for families and I have some tips if you have little kids below!), and I truly could not have asked for a better day.
We met at McCarthy Park on a beautiful, sunny afternoon, and everything came together so easily. The light was soft, the kids had space to explore, and each family settled into the experience in their own way. It felt relaxed, natural, and exactly how I hope sessions feel.
After this day, I’m even more convinced that mini sessions are such a great fit for families with young kids, especially when you come in with the right expectations and a little bit of preparation.
Why Mini Sessions Work So Well for Families with Little Kids
Mini sessions are a great option for families with little ones because they’re short, simple, and low pressure.
There is just enough time to capture meaningful moments without anyone feeling overwhelmed or stretched too thin. For kids with shorter attention spans, that shorter window often works in your favor.
They are also a great option if you are simply looking to update your family photos, whether that is for holiday cards, gifts, or just documenting this season of life. You walk away with a strong set of images without committing to a full session.
Mini Session Tips for Families with Little Kids
From this first round of sessions, it became very clear how much smoother things feel when families come prepared. A few small choices can make a big difference in how the experience unfolds.
Come Prepared
The biggest factor is making sure your kids are fed, rested, and ready to go.
If your session falls right in the middle of naptime and your child relies on that nap, it may be worth waiting for a different round of mini sessions that better fits your schedule.
Arriving a few minutes early can also help everyone ease into the experience instead of jumping in feeling rushed.
Bring Snacks if You Need Them
Snacks can be incredibly helpful, especially for younger kids.
Something small and easy to manage can go a long way in keeping energy up and helping kids feel comfortable. If your child responds well to a little incentive or reward, that is absolutely something you can lean into.
Let Go of Perfect Smiles
Not every child will show up ready to smile on command, and that is completely okay.
Instead of focusing on getting everyone to look at the camera, I guide families through prompts that feel more like play. This allows kids to relax and gives space for genuine expressions to come through naturally.
Those in-between moments often end up being the most meaningful.
Coordinate Your Outfits
Outfits do not need to match exactly. In fact, it usually works better when they don’t.
Choosing colors that complement each other and feel cohesive will create a more natural and timeless look. Neutrals and soft tones tend to photograph especially well and keep the focus on your family rather than the clothing.
Trust the Process
This is the part that matters most.
When you focus too much on getting your kids to behave a certain way, it can take you out of the moment. When you allow your kids to be themselves, the session becomes more relaxed and the connection between you comes through more clearly.
My role is to guide when needed and capture what is naturally unfolding. You do not have to control every moment for it to be meaningful.
Madison Family Mini Sessions at McCarthy Park
McCarthy Park ended up being such a beautiful location for these mini sessions last fall.
The open space, the light, and the ability for kids to move around freely all contributed to a really natural experience. It allowed each family to settle in and interact in a way that felt true to them, which is always the goal.
