One of my favorite parts of this job is getting to watch families grow.

I’ve photographed the Steffens family through so many milestones over the years. From their engagement and wedding to maternity photos, welcoming their first baby, and now celebrating life as a family of four, it’s been such an honor to document each chapter. Seeing familiar faces year after year is one of the greatest gifts of what I do.

This time, I met them at their place for in-home newborn photos near Milwaukee, and it couldn’t have been a sweeter way to celebrate their newest little addition.

Why I Love In-Home Newborn Photos

There’s something so special about photographing a family in the place where they’re creating their everyday memories.

Your home doesn’t have to look like it belongs in a magazine. It doesn’t have to be perfectly decorated or completely spotless. What makes it meaningful is that it’s yours.

Years from now, you’ll remember the nursery you carefully put together, the rocking chair where you spent countless late nights, and the little corners that made up this season of life. Those details become part of your family’s story, and I love preserving them right alongside the big moments.

Letting the Littles Lead

One thing I always appreciate about photographing the Steffens family is how relaxed they are.

They know their kids don’t need to perform or smile perfectly at the camera for us to create beautiful photos. Instead, they let their little ones lead the session, and that always results in the most genuine moments.

There were cuddles on the couch, tiny fingers reaching for the new baby, lots of curiosity, and plenty of movement. Instead of trying to control every moment, they embraced this new season exactly as it is.

Honestly, that’s where the magic happens.

The Beauty of Lifestyle Newborn Photography

Lifestyle newborn sessions aren’t about perfect poses.

They’re about documenting the connection between your family and the little moments that make these early days so special.

The way your toddler peeks into the bassinet.

The sleepy stretches.

The quiet moments in between.

Those are the memories that fade the fastest, and they’re often the ones you’ll treasure most.

Why an In-Home Newborn Session Feels So Relaxed

One of the biggest benefits of in-home newborn photos is that everyone gets to stay comfortable.

There’s no rushing out the door with diapers, bottles, extra outfits, and all the things babies somehow need for a short outing. If someone needs a snack, a diaper change, or a few quiet minutes, everything you need is already there.

Older siblings also tend to settle in more naturally at home. They can take breaks, show me their favorite toys, or snuggle up with Mom and Dad whenever they want. That flexibility helps create photos that feel natural instead of forced.

Watching Their Story Continue

One of the sweetest parts of this session wasn’t just meeting their newest little one.

It was seeing how beautifully this family has grown over the years.

Looking back at their engagement photos and now photographing them as a family of four is such a full-circle moment. It’s a reminder that photography isn’t just about documenting one milestone. It’s about preserving the story as it unfolds, one season at a time.

I truly feel so grateful every time families invite me back to capture another chapter.
